I just read an interesting article on the ownership of social media accounts–including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The legal issue that has arisen recently is this: who retains ownership over accounts once an employee leaves? For instance, one of the key employees at CNN, who had a Twitter following of almost 150,000, left the flagship news station and claimed he should be allowed to retain access to his twitter account.
Several recent cases have sided against employees on this issue–especially in terms of LinkedIn accounts, which typically include many business customers that an employee may want to take with them to their new company.
While these issues are certainly not settled as of yet, it presents an interesting quandary. The point to take away is this: discuss with your employees who has rights to their accounts, and how any “business” twitter accounts will be handled should the employee leave.
